Windscreen Replacement

Windscreen replacement, done properly.

Modern windscreens are structural components that contribute to vehicle safety, visibility and, on many vehicles, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.

Horizon replaces windscreens using OE-specification glass, correct materials and manufacturer repair procedures across South Wales.

Why It Matters

More than replacing glass.

  • Structural rigidity

The windscreen is bonded to the vehicle body and contributes to the structural rigidity of the cabin, particularly during rollover events.

  • Airbag deployment support

In many vehicles, the windscreen forms part of the path through which front-passenger airbags deploy. A poorly bonded screen can fail at the critical moment.

  • Visibility

Optical clarity, correct curvature and undistorted glass are essential for safe driving. Inferior glass creates visual distortion that affects driver perception.

  • Weather sealing

A correctly installed windscreen seals the cabin from water, road noise and environmental contamination. A poor seal leads to leaks, corrosion and trim damage.

  • Driver safety

Laminated windscreen glass is designed to hold together on impact, preventing intrusion into the cabin and retaining structural integrity for rescue procedures.

  • ADAS integration

On many modern vehicles, the windscreen carries cameras, sensors or brackets that support Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — making correct replacement essential.

Horizon treats every windscreen replacement as a safety-critical repair.

Knowing When

When does a windscreen need replacing?

Not every impact means a new windscreen. Where the damage is small, clean and outside the driver’s primary sightline, stone chip repair can restore the glass without replacement — which is why every assessment starts by asking whether replacement is needed at all.

  • Driver vision damage

Damage within the driver's primary vision zone — typically a 290mm horizontal zone directly in front of the driver — cannot be repaired. Even repaired chips in this area can leave optical distortion.

  • Edge cracks

Cracks that reach the edge of the glass compromise the windscreen's structural bond with the body. Edge damage spreads more readily and cannot be reliably arrested by repair.

  • Large stone impacts

Impacts larger than 10mm in diameter — or those that have cracked across the outer layer — cannot be filled cleanly enough to restore optical clarity or structural integrity.

  • Multiple chips

Several chips across the windscreen may each fall within repairable parameters individually, but the cumulative effect on optical quality and glass integrity can make replacement the more appropriate choice.

  • Delamination

Delamination occurs when the interlayer between the two glass layers begins to separate. It typically presents as a milky or hazy zone within the glass and cannot be reversed.

  • ADAS mounting damage

Damage to the area where a camera bracket is bonded to the glass — or within the camera's clear field of view — requires full replacement to restore correct sensor operation.

Glass Specification

Why the correct specification matters.

  • Correct curvature

Each windscreen is manufactured to the precise curvature and profile of the vehicle aperture. Even small deviations in glass shape result in gaps, poor sealing and wind noise that cannot be resolved after fitting.

  • Camera brackets

On vehicles with front-facing ADAS cameras, the camera or its mounting bracket is bonded to an exact position on the glass. Only glass manufactured with the correct bonding patch in the correct location will hold the bracket in the required position.

  • Heating elements

Heated windscreens contain a fine electrical grid embedded in or printed on the glass. This cannot be added retrospectively — the correct glass must be identified and fitted at the point of replacement.

  • Optical clarity

OE-specification glass is manufactured to the optical standards required by the vehicle's ADAS camera, rain sensor and heads-up display. Non-specification glass may introduce distortion that affects sensor performance or image quality.

ADAS & Windscreen

A windscreen replacement doesn’t always end when the glass is fitted.

Many forward-facing cameras are mounted directly to the windscreen or to a bracket bonded to the glass. Replacing the windscreen can alter camera position, bracket alignment or sensor angle.

These changes may be small — but small differences in camera angle affect how a safety system reads the road ahead. A vehicle may return to service appearing normal while operating outside its intended parameters.

Where required by the manufacturer, ADAS calibration after windscreen replacement restores the system to its correct operating position, confirming the safety system is functioning as designed.

Why Procedure Matters

Common mistakes that cause problems later.

  • Incorrect adhesive

Vehicle glass adhesive is an engineered system. Using an adhesive not matched to the glass or vehicle — or mixing systems — can reduce bond strength, extend curing time or cause premature seal failure.

  • Incorrect glass specification

Glass that is close but not correct — wrong heating element layout, missing camera patch or slightly different curvature — will not fit, seal or function as intended, even if it appears to fit at first.

  • Poor aperture preparation

The bonding surface must be correctly cleaned, primed and inspected before installation. Residual old adhesive, contamination or corrosion that is not addressed creates a weak point in the bond.

  • Insufficient curing time

Modern windscreen adhesive systems achieve structural strength over a defined curing period. Returning a vehicle before minimum cure is reached reduces bond strength and can affect structural performance.

  • Skipping calibration

Omitting ADAS calibration on vehicles where the manufacturer requires it leaves the system operating outside its designed parameters — without necessarily triggering a fault code or dashboard warning.

  • Poor finishing

Adhesive squeeze-out, trim fitment and final inspection all matter. Visible adhesive, incorrectly refitted trim and unreturned components indicate that a job was completed quickly rather than correctly.

Horizon Insight

Quick Guide

Why a windscreen replacement can affect ADAS.

On many modern vehicles, the windscreen carries the forward-facing camera or the bracket it mounts to. Even a small change in position — caused by replacing the glass — can alter what the system sees.

That shift may not trigger a dashboard warning. The vehicle may appear to operate normally while the safety system is working outside its designed parameters.

Where the manufacturer requires it, ADAS calibration after windscreen replacement restores the camera to its correct operating position. It is not an optional extra — it is the last step of a correct installation.

Your Questions

Windscreen replacement questions.

How long does windscreen replacement take?

The installation itself typically takes between one and two hours. However, the vehicle must not be driven until the adhesive reaches minimum drive-away strength — usually around one hour after fitting, though this depends on the adhesive system, temperature and humidity. Horizon will confirm the safe drive-away time for your vehicle before you leave.

Can chips always be repaired?

No. Whether a chip can be repaired depends on its size, depth, location and condition. Damage within the driver's primary vision zone, damage that has reached the inner glass layer, or contaminated damage is generally not suitable for repair. Horizon assesses every chip honestly and will recommend repair only when it is genuinely appropriate.

Can I drive immediately after replacement?

Not immediately. Modern windscreen adhesive requires a curing period before the vehicle is safe to drive. This varies depending on the adhesive system used, the ambient temperature and humidity. Horizon will give you a specific safe drive-away time when the work is complete.

Will insurance pay for windscreen replacement?

Most comprehensive motor insurance policies include windscreen replacement cover, sometimes with a separate windscreen excess. Check your policy documents or contact your insurer to confirm your cover before booking. Horizon can provide the documentation and calibration reports your insurer may require.

Will my ADAS need calibration?

This depends on your specific vehicle and the manufacturer's requirements. Many modern vehicles with forward-facing cameras require ADAS calibration after windscreen replacement. Horizon checks calibration requirements for every windscreen job and will advise whether calibration is needed for your vehicle.

Do you replace heated windscreens?

Yes. Heated windscreen replacement requires the correct glass specification — the heating element is integrated into the glass and cannot be added after fitting. Horizon identifies the correct heated windscreen for your vehicle and tests the heating element circuit after installation.

Do you replace acoustic glass?

Yes. Some vehicles are fitted with acoustic (sound-deadening) windscreens containing an additional interlayer to reduce road and wind noise. Horizon identifies and sources the correct acoustic specification glass where required.

Can you come to my home or workplace?

In many cases, yes. Where mobile fitting is appropriate for the work involved — and where the location and conditions allow correct installation — Horizon can attend your home, workplace or another convenient location across South Wales.

Do you replace commercial vehicle glass?

Yes. Horizon provides windscreen replacement for vans, light commercial vehicles and other commercial vehicles. Contact us with your vehicle details to confirm availability and correct glass specification.

What warranty do you provide?

All Horizon windscreen installations are covered by a lifetime workmanship guarantee for the current vehicle owner. If a fault with the installation — such as a water leak or seal failure — becomes apparent, we will put it right. The guarantee covers the workmanship, not accidental damage or subsequent impacts.

What glass do you use?

Horizon uses OE-specification glass — glass manufactured to the same specification as the original glass fitted to the vehicle. We source from reputable suppliers and confirm the correct specification, including any heated element, camera bracket or acoustic layer requirements, before fitting.

Can you replace windscreens for bodyshops?

Yes. Horizon provides trade windscreen replacement and ADAS calibration for bodyshops. We work efficiently within your repair process, provide the necessary documentation and can support your ADAS calibration requirements as part of accident repair work.

What happens if there is rust around the aperture?

Corrosion in the windscreen aperture is a common finding, particularly on older vehicles. Horizon inspects the aperture as part of every replacement. Where corrosion is found, we will advise on the appropriate course of action before proceeding — corrosion that is not addressed compromises the new installation.

Will my rain sensor still work?

Where a rain sensor is fitted, Horizon selects glass that includes the correct sensor coupling or acoustic pad at the sensor location and reconnects the sensor correctly. Sensor function is checked as part of the final quality inspection.

Do you provide documentation?

Yes. Horizon provides documentation covering the installation, glass specification and, where calibration has been carried out, the calibration report. Documentation is provided to the customer and is available to support insurance claims or vehicle service records.
