ADAS / Windscreen — Doc. HZ-ADAS-WR-01

After a windscreen replacement, what happens to ADAS?

Some vehicles use forward-facing cameras or related systems around the windscreen area.

After replacement, the relevant vehicle-specific procedure determines whether ADAS assessment or calibration is required. Horizon can manage both the Vehicle Glass and ADAS sides of the job.

Sec. 01 — Cause

Why can changing the windscreen affect ADAS?

Some vehicles use a forward-facing camera positioned around the windscreen area. That camera or related system operates using a defined field of reference and a vehicle-specific setup.

Replacing the glass, or disturbing a relevant component or mounting area, may trigger a procedure requiring assessment or calibration. The requirement is not the same for every vehicle.

The windscreen replacement and the ADAS decision are connected, but they are not the same procedure.

Sec. 02 — The Decision

Does my vehicle need calibration?

Not every windscreen replacement requires the same ADAS procedure. Assessment comes first, and the vehicle-specific procedure determines whether calibration is required.

Assessment first.
Procedure second.
Calibration where required.

01

Vehicle

The make, model, specification and relevant vehicle information.

02

Fitted system

The camera, sensor configuration or other relevant equipment on that vehicle.

03

Work carried out

The windscreen replacement and any component or mounting-area work involved.

04

Applicable procedure

The vehicle and system procedure that governs the required assessment or calibration.

05

Other conditions

Any further preparation, diagnostic information or conditions relevant to the procedure.

Sec. 03 — Horizon Workflow

Where applicable to the vehicle

  1. 01Identify

Confirm the vehicle, windscreen specification and relevant fitted systems.

  2. 02Replace

Carry out the required windscreen replacement using the correct installation process.

  3. 03Assess

Determine the relevant ADAS requirement for that vehicle and system.

  4. 04Calibrate

Carry out the applicable calibration procedure where the vehicle requires it.

  5. 05Verify

Check the relevant outcome and system status.

  6. 06Document

Provide relevant job or calibration documentation where applicable.

This is the joined-up process where those stages are applicable. Individual vehicles and jobs may require different or additional steps.

Sec. 04 — Camera Context

The camera around the windscreen.

Some vehicles use a forward-facing camera positioned around the windscreen area. Depending on the vehicle, these systems may support lane-related or forward-environment driver-assistance features.

The exact functions and calibration procedure vary by vehicle/system. This is why the presence of a windscreen camera is a reason for assessment, not an automatic instruction for one identical calibration.

Sec. 05 — Calibration Context

What type of calibration may be used?

01

Static calibration

Static calibration is performed at Horizon’s calibration facility in Cardiff where the relevant vehicle and system procedure requires that method.

02

Dynamic calibration

Dynamic calibration can be carried out mobile where appropriate where the vehicle/system procedure and required conditions allow.

Decision

The method is determined by the vehicle, system and procedure.

Sec. 06 — Handoff

Who manages the next step?

If Horizon replaces the windscreen

One coordinated job journey.

Horizon can assess the Vehicle Glass requirement and the relevant ADAS requirement as part of the same overall job journey. That can reduce unnecessary handoffs, keep responsibility clear and keep relevant documentation together.

If someone else replaced it

Assessment is still the next step.

Horizon can assess the vehicle and determine the appropriate next step based on the system, work carried out and relevant procedure. Depending on the case, this may involve diagnostics or scanning where appropriate, calibration where required and verification. The previous installation is not assumed to be faulty.

Sec. 07 — System Messages

A warning light is information, not the diagnosis.

A warning message after windscreen work does not automatically prove that calibration is the only issue. Likewise, the absence of a warning light does not itself determine whether a procedure is required.

The correct next step depends on the vehicle and relevant procedure. Horizon can provide diagnostic and scanning support where appropriate before the required work is determined.

Sec. 08 — Specification Note

Correct identification matters.

Modern windscreens may vary according to fitted equipment and vehicle specification. Correct vehicle and glass identification helps determine the appropriate replacement glass and understand the relevant ADAS configuration.

Vehicle
Confirm the vehicle and specification before the work is planned.
Glass
Match the replacement glass to the vehicle requirements and fitted equipment.
System
Use the identified ADAS configuration to determine the relevant assessment.

Sec. 09 — Completion Record

Verification follows the work.

Where calibration is carried out, verification and relevant documentation form part of Horizon’s procedure-led approach. What is recorded depends on the vehicle, system and work carried out.

Identify
Keep the vehicle, glass and fitted-system context clear.
Verify
Check the relevant outcome and system status following the applicable procedure.
Record
Provide relevant job or calibration documentation where applicable.

Horizon Insight

Glass and ADAS

The glass is fitted before the ADAS decision is complete.

For some vehicles, a windscreen replacement changes the context in which a forward-facing camera or related system operates. That does not mean every replacement follows the same calibration path. It means the vehicle-specific procedure should be checked.

The useful question is not whether every windscreen replacement needs calibration. It is what this vehicle, this fitted system and this replacement require next. Horizon connects the Vehicle Glass and ADAS parts of that decision.

After Windscreen Replacement — Frequently Asked Questions

Questions after the glass is replaced.

Does every windscreen replacement require ADAS calibration?

No. Some vehicles use a forward-facing camera or related system around the windscreen area, but the vehicle-specific procedure determines whether assessment or calibration is required after replacement.

How do I know if my car has a camera around the windscreen?

A camera may be positioned around the windscreen area on some vehicles, but equipment and functions vary by specification. Horizon can assess the vehicle, fitted system and relevant procedure rather than assuming the same setup applies to every car.

Can Horizon replace the windscreen and calibrate the ADAS?

Yes. Horizon provides Vehicle Glass services and ADAS assessment and calibration. Where the vehicle-specific procedure requires it, the relevant glass and ADAS work can be managed as one coordinated job journey.

What if another company has already replaced my windscreen?

Horizon can assess the situation and determine the appropriate next step. Depending on the vehicle, system and procedure, that may include system assessment, diagnostics or scanning where appropriate, calibration where required, and verification. The previous installation is not assumed to be faulty.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Static calibration uses a controlled setup at Horizon’s calibration facility in Cardiff where that method is required. Dynamic calibration involves driving the vehicle under the conditions required by the procedure and can be carried out mobile where appropriate.

Can calibration be carried out at my location?

Dynamic calibration can be carried out mobile where appropriate and where the vehicle procedure and conditions allow. Static calibration is performed at Horizon’s calibration facility in Cardiff.

Will I always get a warning light if calibration is needed?

No. The presence or absence of a warning light does not by itself determine whether a procedure is required. The vehicle, fitted system and relevant procedure determine the appropriate next step.

How long does the process take?

Timing varies according to the vehicle, replacement glass, fitted systems, diagnostics, procedure, calibration method and required conditions. Horizon can advise more accurately after the vehicle and work are assessed.
